Patriots Enjoy A Sweep Filled Weekend!

04/30/2018 9:13 AM -
Bridgewater, NJ- Two walk-off celebrations, three wins and a first place standing in the Liberty Division highlighted a memorable Opening Weekend for the Somerset Patriots.
The six-time Atlantic League champions have started their 2018 season strong with a three-game sweep of the visiting Road Warriors. In fact, this marked the fourth-straight season that the Patriots swept their opponent in their first home series of the year, and third-straight season in which they have won at least their first three games.
The 2018 season kicked off with fireworks (both literally and figuratively) Friday night. Opening Day starting pitcher Cory Riordan got off to a hot start four scoreless innings to begin the game. Former Major Leaguer Alex Castellanos then opened up the scoring for the season with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth. Back-and-forth action ensued in a thrilling contest before fifth-year Patriots infielder Scott Kelly hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game and a walk-off RBI single in the 11th inning to win it.
Justin Trapp also enjoyed a strong contest, going 2-for-5 from the plate with an RBI and the game-scoring run in the 11th.
The momentum from Friday’s win was not halted by Saturday’s inclement weather. Somerset followed up with a doubleheader sweep of the Road Warriors on Sunday, shutting out the new franchise in both games. That included another walk-off winner from Kelly in the seventh inning of game one and a seven-run outburst from the lineup in game two.
Patriots pitchers have combined to yield just two earned runs over the first 25 innings of the season, good for a league-best 0.72 staff ERA.
At the plate, Trapp is leading the way with a .455 batting average (third in the league) and five RBI (tied-first in the league). Additionally, Julio Borbon is tied for the league lead in doubles (3), Alfredo Rodriguez is hitting .375 and newcomer Mike Fransoso has stolen two bases.
Somerset looks to continue its strong start to the season when they welcome in the rival Long Island Ducks for a three game series at TD Bank Ballpark beginning on Tuesday, May 1st.
