CENTRAL ISLIP , NY- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Long Island Ducks 4-3 in front of 6,327 fans at Citibank Park on Sunday evening.
The Patriots broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the top of the eighth inning to take 4-3 lead when second baseman Matt Hagen drew a lead off walk, stole second and scored on a two out RBI bloop single to right by catcher Travis Anderson.
Somerset struck first with two runs in the top of the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead when Anderson lined a one out two run single to center. Hagen and designated hitter Jeff Nettles led off with back-to-back singles to left and advanced into scoring position after a groundout.
Long Island responded with a run in the bottom of the second inning to make it 2-1 Patriots when leftfielder George Lombard led off with a solo home run (4) to left center.
The Ducks tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the bottom of the third inning when third baseman Matt Cavagnaro led off with a single to left, moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt and came home on a two out RBI single to left by Lombard .
The Patriots took a 3-2 lead with a run in the top of the fourth inning when Nettles drew a one out walk, advanced to third on a double into the left field corner by third baseman Teuris Olivares and scored on an RBI ground out to shortstop by Anderson .
Long Island tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Ducks loaded the bases on one out bloop single to right by first baseman Victor Rodriguez, a single to center by designated hitter Jose Herrera and a single to right by rightfielder Johnny Hernandez. Cavagnaro then hit a two out RBI single to left that plated pinch runner Dennis Donovan.
Patriots’ reliever Jared Gothreaux (5-6) picked up the win, throwing 1.1 shutout innings, allowing no hits and striking out two. Ducks’ reliever Hansel Izquierdo (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing one run on one hit while walking one and striking out one in one inning pitched. Patriots’ closer Bret Prinz pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 12th save of the season.
With the win the Patriots improved to 20-10 in the second half and 63-37 overall while the Ducks dropped to 13-16 and 50-49 overall.
