Patriots Top Revolution 5-3

Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots defeated the York Revolution 5-3 before 5,343 fans at TD Bank Ballpark on Saturday evening.
 
Somerset took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Left fielder Mike Rodriguez doubled and scored on an RBI single by right fielder Noah Hall.
 
The Patriots added two runs to the lead in the bottom of the third inning. First baseman Joe Burke singled, stole second, and scored on an RBI double by Hall. Third baseman Jeff Nettles then drove home Hall with an RBI single for a 3-0 advantage.
 
Somerset put another run on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Center fielder Sean Smith singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Hall to make the score 4-0.
 
York cut the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Shortstop Danny Sandoval and designated hitter Tom Collaro singled and right fielder Jason Aspito followed with a three-run home run (2) to make the score 4-3.
 
Somerset added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Second baseman Matt Hagen singled and later scored on a base hit by Smith for a 5-3 advantage.
 
Patriots starter Jared Gothreaux (1-2) picked up the win, allowing three earned runs on nine hits and six strikeouts in six innings pitched. York starter Dan Foli (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings pitched. Travis Minix picked up his fourth save of season with a scoreless ninth inning pitched.
 
The 2009 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Sunday, May 10th with a 1:35 pm game against the York Revolution. Sunday’s game includes Pink Caps for the first 2,000 women as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Day to benefit the Somerset Medical Center Foundation.
