Bridgewater, NJ- The York Revolution (34-28, 62-70) defeated the Somerset Patriots (29-33, 71-61) 8-4 at TD Bank Ballpark on Saturday evening.
The Revolution jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning on a solo home run by Jared Mitchell (13) and a three-run homer by Dayron Varona (4).
York extended the lead in the top of the third inning on an RBI double by Travis Witherspoon.
Somerset got on the board in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Alfredo Rodriguez that made the score 5-1.
Varona drove in two more runs on a triple and Witherspoon added an RBI base hit to put York up 8-1 in the fifth inning.
Justin Trapp drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it an 8-2 game.
The Patriots cut the lead in half in the bottom of the eighth inning on a two-run double by Mark Minicozzi.
Somerset’s pitchers combined for a team season-high 17 strikeouts in the game.
Joe Van Meter (2-2) picked up the win with 2.1 scoreless innings pitched. Efrain Nieves (3-6) suffered the loss, allowing eight earned runs on seven hits and eight strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched.
“I just thought Efrain wasn’t sharp in the beginning. He was making a few mistakes and leaving the ball up and they capitalized on it,” said Somerset Patriots manager Brett Jodie. “Our bullpen did a great job keeping us in the game. They just got out in front early and we couldn’t do enough to catch up despite some big hits.”
The 2017 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Sunday afternoon with a 1:05 pm game against the York Revolution. The game includes Camouflage Baseballs (1st 1,000 Fans) presented by the Basilone Memorial Foundation. For tickets, visit www.somersetpatriots.com.
