Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots have announced that pitcher Brian Adams has been voted as the #7 Patriot in team history.
The Top 20 Patriots presented by AT&T is a season-long promotion as part of the team’s 20th Season. The Top 20 Patriots were voted on by the fans and ranked by an expert panel of team officials, media, and long-time fans.
“It is truly an honor to be considered one of the top players of such a successful organization. From the fans, to the ownership and front office, and the managerial staff, the Somerset Patriots have a remarkable winning tradition. I am honored to have been a part of it,” Adams said.
Adams joined the Patriots in 2007 after spending time in the Boston Red Sox and Milwaukee Brewers organizations, mainly as a reliever. Before that year, Adams only started 13 games in his career, but became a part of Somerset’s rotation after spring training and never looked back.
On his way to becoming the 2007 Atlantic League Pitcher of The Year, Adams finished the season 15-2 with a 3.68 ERA, and 117 strikeouts in 156.1 innings pitched. The 15 wins set a team record for a single season. Even more impressive was that Adams was 11-0 at home with a 2.52 ERA that season.
“I came to the Patriots with zero expectations. Sparky and Brett gave me the opportunity early on to compete for a spot in the rotation and I began to feel really comfortable,” said Adams. “For me personally, success bred confidence and, as the season progressed, I truly expected to put our team in a great position to win each time I went to the mound. Whether by pitching, hitting, or defense, we as team began to trust in each other and develop an attitude of winning that would continue not only through that season, but for the next few seasons as well.”
Adams returned to the team in 2008 and finished with an 11-7 record, a 4.92 ERA, and 90 strikeouts in 135.1 innings pitched in 26 games. His 11 wins was the team high that season and helped lead the Patriots to a championship.
Adams helped lead the Patriots to a championship in 2009, finishing with a 13-8 record and 4.61 ERA. He won a crucial Game Four against the Newark Bears in the Freedom Division Series that clinched Somerset’s way into the Championship Series.
He returned to the team in the second half of 2010 and led the playoff push with his 3.24 ERA in ten games started.
Adams is the Patriots all-time career wins leader with his 43-21 record. He helped lead Somerset to the playoffs in each of his four seasons with the team, winning two championships and establishing himself as a big game pitcher for the Patriots time and time again.
“Our championship teams had incredible team chemistry. Not only did we love each other as teammates, we truly did not want to let one another down. One of the biggest reasons I feel that I personally, and we as team, had success in big games was the fact that I prepared the same for each game. Whether it be a morning game in early June, or game 5 of a playoff series, I never wanted to let my teammates down by not preparing and not giving my absolute best to help the team win,” Adams said.
Adams became a fan and team favorite for being one of the best pitchers in Somerset Patriots history on the field and one of the absolute best individuals off the field. He was always available for community appearances, to sign an autograph, or anything he was asked during his time with the team.
