John Sterling Named Honorary Voice of The Atlantic League All-Star Game

BRIDGEWATER, NJ- The Somerset Patriots and the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball have announced that New York Yankees broadcasting legend John Sterling will be the Honorary Voice of the 2017 Atlantic League All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 12th at TD Bank Ballpark.

“I’m excited to be part of this extraordinary event,” Sterling said. “I’ve been a long-time fan of the Somerset Patriots and an even bigger fan of the Kalafer family. Steve, Jonathan and Josh do things the right way. When Steve Kalafer asked would I be interested in participating in the All-Star Game, I said it would be my honor to join you and all the fans on what will be a beautiful night at the ballpark.”

He will be on field during the pre-game festivities and add color commentating during the Home Run Derby. Sterling will also introduce the Honorary Managers- New York Yankees legends Sparky Lyle and Willie Randolph- as well as calling the All-Stars to the line during introductions.

Sterling has served as the play-by-play man for the Yankees since 1989, having never missed a single game in his 27 seasons in the broadcast booth. This streak includes a notable 2005 season where Sterling called every single pitch of every Yankees game that year.

Aside from his play-by-play duties, Sterling has worked for the YES Network since 2002. During his time at YES, he has won awards for his role as host of Yankeeography and Yankee Classics. Sterling also works as the play-by-play announcer for Ivy League college football and basketball, and even served in the same role for several New Jersey Nets games.

Prior to joining the Yankees, Sterling got his start in broadcasting as the play-by-play broadcaster of the Baltimore Bullets in the 1970-71 season. From there, he moved to the gridiron where he called games for the Morgan State University football team from 1971 to 1978. Among his other play-by-play stops along the way include New York Nets basketball (WMCA Radio) from 1975-1980, New York Islanders hockey (WMCA Radio) from 1975-1978, Atlanta Hawks basketball (WSB Radio) from 1981-1989, Atlanta Braves baseball (WSB Radio) from 1982-1987, and a year of work with the Washington Bullets in 1981 (WDCA-TV).

The 2017 Atlantic League All-Star Game is the premiere event of the summer, hosted by the Somerset Patriots at TD Bank Ballpark on Wednesday, July 12th. The event is presented by RWJBarnabas Health and Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey and will feature the biggest Fireworks Show in ballpark history, commemorative giveaways for all ages, entertainment, and a Home Run Derby.
