Bridgewater, NJ- The Somerset Patriots have announced that right-handed pitcher Jim Magrane has been voted as the #16 Patriot in team history.
The Top 20 Patriots presented by AT&T is a season-long promotion as part of the team’s 20th Season. The Top 20 Patriots were voted on by the fans and ranked by an expert panel of team officials, media, and long-time fans.
“I feel like Somerset really invigorated my career. Sometimes you get to a point where you wonder if you should keep playing,” said Magrane. “Sparky and Brett gave me a chance to play at a real nice facility for a great organization and fan base. It made the answer to that question very easy.”
Magrane finished the 2009 season as the first ever Atlantic League pitcher to lead the league in wins, ERA, and strikeouts. He finished with a 15-4 record, a 2.70 ERA, and 134 strikeouts in 183 innings pitched in 27 games.
Magrane’s 15 wins tied a Patriots single-season record with Brian Adams (2007). He was the third Patriots pitcher to win the award, joining Justin Jensen (1999) and Adams (2007).
“I never saw anybody match what Jim did that season. What a pick up that is to a staff to have a guy that dominating that is going to give you the best chance to win every time he went out and pitched,” said Somerset Patriots manager Brett Jodie. “Even when he wasn’t at his best, he found ways to win. I know he’d make pitches up on the spot and use whatever worked that day. He probably could have won 20 games that year.”
In addition to being named Pitcher of the Year, Magrane was awarded the Pitcher of the Month in August where he was 3-1 with a 2.52 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 39.1 innings pitched in five games started.
“The 2009 season really came from having a great support staff and teammates that had all been there for at least a year or two. That comfort and continuity mixed in with the winning made it a fun year. You always do better in any job when you enjoy it,” Magrane added.
Magrane originally joined the Patriots after a short stint with the Long Island Ducks in the early part of the 2008 season. He finished with a Patriots career 27-16 record, a 3.58 ERA and 270 strikeouts over 381.2 innings pitched in 59 games.
Magrane had prior experience in the Tampa Bay Rays and Washington Nationals organizations, including six seasons at the Triple-A level before coming to the Atlantic League.
